Support mushroom farmers to standardise production and improve yield (2007 to date) (AOF-WEEL)

In 2007, AOF took a pioneering step by establishing the first mushroom spawn laboratory in Matara, opening new doors for rural families across Galle, Matara, and Hambantota. For many small-scale entrepreneurs and home-based farmers—especially women—mushroom cultivation became an accessible, low-cost, high-return livelihood.

The project offered more than just high-quality spawn. Farmers were trained in proper cultivation techniques, supported to maintain hygiene and consistency, and connected with markets that valued reliable, standardised produce. Over the years, more than 700 farmers strengthened their incomes and gained confidence through this growing industry.

Today, AOF continues the journey by setting up a new laboratory in the Kegalle district. Working closely with the Kegalle Mushroom Producers Association (KEMPA), the organisation now focuses on bringing uniform standards to production, processing, quality, and nutrition—helping the region build a stronger, more sustainable mushroom sector for the future.
